About 4 months ago, my father purchased a 2004 4Runner for my brother, after the piston rings in his WJ gave up the ghost at 230K miles. He liked that one so much, he bought himself a 2005 with the famous 4.7L V8, the former bearing the 4.0L V6.
He managed a solid month of use before things began to fail, first went the air conditioning, meriting a few hundred dollars to set right again. He would also have to put new tires on, not a big deal, but yesterday came the worst possible news he could have imagined.
Compression on #2 is about half of what it should be, the suspect being a bad valve.
Bear in mind this vehicle has just 110,000 miles, a wobbly legged fawn by Toyota standards, and has evidence of the timing belt being changed once already, so it is not as if maintenance was completely neglected.
He is going to seek a second opinion, in the interest of ruling out any other suspects. But should a rebuild be in order, estimates from the same shop who rebuilt the 22re in his 87 4Runner are around $3,500.
I suggested acquiring another motor from a Toyota of the same vintage, but then did research to find out the Japanese built motors (4Runner, Cruiser, Prado) are different from the US built motors (Tundra, Sequoia).
What are Oppo's thoughts? Hoping for Hammerhead's input on this...

Drop in a 22RE and call it a life.

A leaking valve can be proven by doing a cylinder leak down test. A wet compression test might give you an idea, but that’s a but of voodoo that doesn’t yield reliable results. If a valve is in fact leaking I suggest starting with a fuel injection service to try to clean any carbon out that may be holding the valve open. Chances are slim that it will work, but it can and it has. Is it running rough? Setting a CEL?

It’s running more or less fine, maybe a little rough at idle but nothing alarming. CEL has been on and stays on. Something about these the VSC lights come on when the CEL is lit, I believe it turns off the VSC systems. I'll have him ask about a wet compression test and cylinder leak down. Thank you.

SEAFOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, that might actually diagnose a few things. Some seafoam through the intake and brake booster vacuum l line to see if there’s any buildup anywhere. Shouldn’t be too much smoke but if you smog out the neighborhood.......you probably found some culprits there

That is surprisingly low mileage for those kinds of problems, but I guess every now and then it will happen. I don’t know about the 4.7l regarding US vs. Japan, but I do know the 4.7l in the Land Cruiser was different than the others, in that it has forged internals vs. cast. Actually the TRD supercharger, which was designed for the Land Cruiser and its stronger 4.7l, was discontinued because it was being used on the cast version which couldn’t handle boost as well.
Not sure what version the 4runner came with though. I believe the Tundras all had cast internals though.

Have you poked around t4r.org? http://www.toyota-4runner.org/
I’ve never heard of a 4.7L having problems like that at such low miles..

Sorry my friend, I don’t have anything to add that others already have. Do as AMGtech said and get a leakdown test. I seriously doubt that the engine is a loss, or even a rebuild, but it can happen. my money says that its something minor. Gte that code read first off, and yes, teh VCS turns off when there is a CEL (as BlindWilly and his FJC about that!)

Toyotas are junk. This BS myth of the durability is way overblown. Our Camry motor, literally the bottom let go, total mess. They wanted $5,000 to fix it, and it was at the very limit of the warranty which we argued, but they didn’t see it that way. My wallet still hurts from that crap car.
Never buy a Toyota, they’re boring garbage.

I can’t speak to the reliability of their cars, as we have only ever owned body on frame Toyotas over the last 30 years. My mother bought a Rav4 about a year and a half ago and it has been trouble free. But I'm sure nothing is 100% across the board. My wife did inherit a corolla with 220k miles which got passed down to my niece. It was running strong when said niece plowed it into a tree.

Sure. I was timing more along the lines of BG with its own injector tool, and the pressure canister to run through the injectors without gasoline.
